Missile just 5 miles north of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the tourist destination of Pigeon Forge offers a unique southern culture that draws country music fans from all over the country. Home to Dollywood and Splash Country, Pigeon Forge is a tourist destination but so much more. In addition to gift shops, outlet malls, and amusement parks, Pigeon Forge offers a great place to raise a family, excellent schools, and beautiful homes.
Pigeon Forge History
The name "Pigeon Forge" is derived from an old iron Forge built by Isaac Love back in the early 1800s. The Forge refers to its location along the Little Pigeon River, what is now called the Old Mill. And yes, it's really because there were flocks of passenger pigeons that frequented its banks during the first European American settlers.
Over the next couple of centuries, Pigeon Forge was part of the Revolutionary War, had a hand in building the Appalachian communities, yet still remains an isolated mountain hamlet with no major roads in and out of the village. The nearest railroad station in the early 20th century was Sevierville but when the Great Smoky Mountains National Park opened in 1934, the Tennessee Valley Authority needed to jumpstart tourism in Pigeon Forge. Improvements to major roadways and the establishment of a few campgrounds led to more folks traveling to this isolated community.
Pigeon Forge was officially incorporated in 1961 and in 1969, Pigeon Forge offered a zoning plan assigning the entire strip along US 441 for tourism use. More and more tourists flock to the area, which spurred on the construction and advancement of amusement parks such as Silver Dollar City, named after the successful theme park in Branson Missouri. The Ozark Mountain Theme of the Branson location was reapplied as an Appalachian theme in Pigeon Forge.
Tourism further expanded with the Knoxville World's Fair, when Pigeon Forge initiated an aggressive economic plan centered around theme parks, malls, amphitheaters, and live music venues. All of this increasing tourism brought more and more folks to the area and in 1985, Dolly Parton proposed a partnership with other developers and she became a majority partner in the enterprise. Silver Dollar City was renamed Dollywood, which still runs today.
Life in Pigeon Forge
Dollywood isn't the only landmark and attraction in Pigeon Forge, there are multiple adventure parks, golf clubs, museums, Opry theaters, galleries, fountains, unique experiences, and more. Pigeon Forge is known for its truck and car shows each year, which includes the Great Smoky Mountain Truck Show, The Food Truck Festival, Jeep Invasion, the Pontiac Car Club Show, Fall Rod Run and dozens of others.
Is it only tourism?
While Pigeon Forge is definitely known for its activities, adventures, theme parks, and tourism, this is not its only claim to fame. The area was a dry jurisdiction for decades and only since 2013 have authorized businesses been allowed to serve on-premise alcoholic beverages.
There are plenty of folks that choose Pigeon Forge as their year-round residence and there are several schools, jobs, and residential neighborhoods surrounding the small village and community. Residents with school-age children are part of the Sevier County School System and students typically attend the Northview Elementary school, the Pigeon Forge middle school, the Sevierville middle school, and the Seymour high school or Sevier County high school. Top-rated schools continue to be the Gatlinburg Pitman high school, just outside of Pigeon Forge.
Pigeon Forge Real Estate
You'll find a variety of homes, condominiums, townhouses, and single-family properties as well as ranches and farms all throughout the area, specifically within the city limits and just outside Pigeon Forge. Condominiums start less than $120,000 with single-family homes between $150,000 and $500,000.
From homes along the lake or river, to log cabins and beautiful rustic ranch homes, the types of homes, styles, designs, and prices are all over the board. You can find beautiful Alpine-style estates, mountain cabins, and beautiful log houses for sale between $300,000 and $900,000. Starter homes and condominiums range from $100,000-$300,000. Newer homes and subdivisions are likely to have homeowner associations with fees ranging from $25 per month to $250 per month.
